  1. I think you need a relaxing chair to sit in while you do hand sewing. I would love to win the 30's fabric. Please enter me in the drawing.

  2. I would suggest a designated ironing table. A big one to iron yardage, bigger quilts, and one that has storage space underneath. I am enjoying watching your sewing space come to life and can't wait to see more photos.

    ReplyDelete
  3. You need as big a design wall as you can fit in your room. I love my design wall.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I would suggest a laptop/computer so you can listen to music (via cd's, internet radio stations) while you work.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I've been enjoying your pictures Jane and I think you will need a nice big table in your new room so that you have plenty of room to cut out and baste quilts together. I would love to give a home to your 1930s fabrics :)

  6. i am drooling over your scraps... i love 30's fabrics..

I love my radio...I can listen to cd's while I sew...

  7. A stool that's the perfect height for sitting at your cutting table and/or ironing board while cutting or ironing--- AND Lots and lots and lots of books and fabric!! :D I would love to be the winner of your 'scraps'. :D

  8. Good Ventilation - after all you cannot live without oxygen right ;)
    Thanks for the chance!

  9. A comfortable chair, a table at the correct height, a bigger than normal design wall and a radio/iPod for your music. How wonderful that you're getting to plan all this from scratch - will be following your progress.

  10. PEGBOARDS. Oh excuse me for yelling. But I happen to love my pegboards! I have them on one wall and recently bought this turnstile version for my threads. One thing it has forced me to realize - I have too much embroidery thread. (I will be downsizing that soon, lol).

  11. You definitely need an adjustable height table that is good for cutting as well as basting.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I couldn't live without a table that is the right size for rotary cutting. Dining tables are too low, countertops are too high. My Koala table is just right and is easy on my back. Kathie L in Alllentown

  13. One thing I'm looking forward to when we move and I get my sewing room is a place to put all my quilting books and magazines! They will be within reach for inspiration rather than stacked next to our bed.
And you need some sort of inspiration space-- like a bulletin board where you can tack up pretty things, geometric things, anything that helps with the creative process.
In 2 weeks, we'll see if I have these things yet! :)

  14. Oh, I love 30's fabric. All suggestions are a must--large ironing surface, large cutting area, music, and a design wall. I like having a U-shaped sewing area where I have a small ironing service/board and small cutting mat--all at right angles to my sewing machine.

  15. I would love love to win some 30's scraps. I think you need either an ironing table or a design wall for your new sewing room.

  16. Love the 30's fabrics. The one thing I need in a work space is an open area to layout a project, or to press a large piece of fabric. So that would be a large worktable. Something with storage underneath so you can move one project while wanting to work on the next. After all we all have many projects going at once don't we?

  17. Oh my goodness....there is so much! When I built my studio three years ago I went through the same thought process. I did a pretty good job, but the one thing that I wish that I had is even more electrical outlets with one at the cutting table. I thought I had enough to power the whole country (as did the electrician), but would still like more. Other than that my ideas would include a hard surface floor, design wall, good ironing station close to the machine, a cutting table that you can walk all the way around, lots of fabric storage and bookshelves.

  18. I could not sew without my design wall. It is so helpful in many ways.

Please enter me in the drawing for the 30's fabric

  19. Store your books/magazines in milk crates turned size ways. They stay together, don't fall over or out. I store mine in my closet which helps to keep off the dust.

  20. What you really need costs less than $30 -- it's a purple Gypsy SitUpon cushion. It is a soft, rubber, cushion that encourages (well, requires, really) good posture and discourages back ache. I sat on mine to sew for a 4-day retreat of 12-16 hours sewing per day, and no back or shoulder ache at all!

  21. I suggest an endless supply of chocolates... The 30's fabrics would be just what I need to add to my Raggedy and Friends quilt I am working on. Thanks for the chance to win

    ReplyDelete
  22. A laptop computer. I see that others have said the same thing, but it's really functional. You can listen to radio, watch a movie, listen to music and use for reference if needed. Good luck with the new room. Sounds fun.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think you neeed a big table for cutting your fabric. Maybe one with a drop leaf so you can make it bigger when you need to pin or baste a quilt.
I would love to win your scraps. Have not done any 30's quilts yet and that would be nice for a scrap quilt. Thanks for the chance to win.

    ReplyDelete
  24. What I would love is a great sewing machine with a wonderful table one that is purfect height machine droped in so you have a great smooth surface with a iron section added to you right so all you have to do when you need to iron is to trun to your right. The next thing I owuld love is a design wall. Have fun picking.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I am with Betty, a special place for the endless supply of chocolates and then all the other things, like the computer, design board, radio, maybe a TV! Anyway, have fun with doing your sewing room and I would love to have your 1930's scraps!
PS..if you go with the chocolates, don't forget the wipes!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh I would say for sure a design wall! Mine is portable (well portable in my basement - not portable as in a car) but it is so nice to have a place to slap stuff up on and look at it. Oh I just saw Leah said a large ironing station. Well maybe that might be higher on the need than the design wall! Heck do both!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Large enough table space to have 2 sewing machines set up.

    ReplyDelete
  28. One thing I love in my room is my office chair. I got a good chair on rollers, so I can go from my sewing table to my cutting table without getting up;)

    Debbie

    ReplyDelete
  29. You need an ironing table like mine - up on "tube" legs and 24-36" wide x 72" long! A MUST! And a sheet of pink insulation covered with flannel or batting - both sides so you can have two projects up at once! OR a BIG project! Clear plastic bins are on sale (orange tops from Halloween) at Target - get lots!! A BIG candy bowl with a lid!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Some decorative boxes and jars to keep the favorite buttons, ribbons and other stuff. You wrote that you have storage, but probably not like this.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I would suggest a large design wall. I have yet to put up a design wall, but hopefully it will be in the works soon. (it means I have to clean out my sewing room first, so I've been putting it off :) I love the fabrics. Thanks for the great giveaway.

    ReplyDelete
  32. You have received lots of good ideas. Definitely the large table for cutting and basting quilts. I also like to have a small ironing station next to the sewing machine. I made one using the top of a wooden folding table. It's the perfect size for ironing 12.5" blocks.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think you need an ipod loaded with your favorite music or audio book with speakers. I have this set up in my sewing area and really enjoy it. Please enter me in your scrap giveaway.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I would suggest a nice, big design wall. I love how your sewing studio is coming together. Looking forward to more photos. Thank you for the giveaway.

  35. Definately need an ironing board that either unfolds out of the wall or from behind a door. Its great to have an accessable but out of the way ironing board!

  36. Wow what a great selection of 30's fabric. You have received a lot of great ideas. One thing I like to keep on hand is my digital camera. I do not have a design wall, but even if I did, it would be hard for me to remember how I arrange blocks. Taking a picture with the digital camera I can look at the different design layouts and choose which one looks the best. You might also like to invest (or make) one of those large ironing boards. The narrow ones don't seem to do well with larger quilts.

    ReplyDelete
  37. A bulletin board you put up over your sewing machine so you can pin your patterns into it and you can check them while you sew.

    ReplyDelete
  38. A large, walk-around cutting table situated at the right height would be my #1 suggestion (not being in pain from stooping over to cut always makes me feel more creative!). Then I would suggest a design wall and a comfortable chair for hand sewing and reading. I'm so delighted you get to plan your room from scratch!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Love your scraps! I would say a proper height for you cutting table/ironing table. I have both of these and they make a huge difference for me in my quilting.

    ReplyDelete
  40. There are alot of good suggestions and I can't really add as far as "sewing" things go. However, one thing I don't have enough of is "decorative" items. Make room for pretty things to decorate with.

  41. An idea board to post and keep in sight the ideas, colors, photos, inspiration that keep you motivated (and looks pretty too)! Love the scraps - thanks for putting together yet another wonderful giveaway! Can't wait to see the progress on your room.

    ReplyDelete
  42. a really comfortable sewing chair....if you find one let me know.....thanks for a chance to win

    ReplyDelete
  43. A design wall visible from your sewing chair would be a nice addition. Love those scraps.

    ReplyDelete
  44. A bulletin board to put up ideas and inspiration, a way to listen to books on tape or music, and some "things" that you love in beautiful colors to make it a happy place.

    ReplyDelete
  45. A design wall!! And if you don't feel like you have room you can do what I did and buy a vanishing design wall. I love mine!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Definately a good chair and a large table. I have to share mine with cats!

    ReplyDelete
  47. You need Chocolate!....grin.

I can't work without my Ott light, phone on mute, air cool, and my swivel cutting mat.

    And of course giveaways.

    Billie

  48. Oooh, would love to win! 30s are my favorites!
I love my CD/MP3 player in my sewing room, so that I can listen to music and audio books. And a nice and comfortable rocking chair for hand quilting.
Looking forward to seeing your new room! Have fun decorating it!

    ReplyDelete
  49. All suggestions are good - but I will put in what my son (5) is pestering me to get... a recycling can. On the main floor and 2nd floor of our house we have recycling bins for paper, cardboard, etc... but I don't have one in my attic/craft room. Amazing how much paper I am throwing away - and he is getting after me about it.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Love your scraps Jane! Congrat's on the new sewing room! A mini iron you can keep next to your machine for pressing small seams as you are making blocks and a big design wall. :-) Have a great week!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I agree with Debbie. Love my office chair. You definitely need a good one as many hours will be spent there. Thanks for another giveaway! My favorite line of fabrics is the 30's!

    ReplyDelete
  52. How about a cafe curtain rod with lots of supports hung across one long wall so that you can display your quilts when they are finished?

I also love having a bulletin board on the wall just above my sewing machine so I can pin my instructions to it and refer to them while I sew. This way, they don't get lost in the fabric around me!

    Keep those pics coming!

    MGM

  53. If I had all the room in the world, I would have an entire wall where I could hang & piece together my quilts.

    ReplyDelete
  54. You need an ergonomic, large cutting table. Just the right height to not give you a backache, and large enough to easily cut yardages. thanks for the chance to win!

    ReplyDelete
  55. A design wall, cutting table and an ipod dock. :) Congrats on your new room! Thanks for the giveaway - I've recently started loving 30s fabric!

    ReplyDelete
  56. A REALLY pretty fabric trash can, a pretty place to toss all of the fabric scraps that don't make it into the pretty scrap fabric bins. Somehow a pretty garbage can would make me feel better about throwing out all of those gorgeous leftovers!

    ReplyDelete
  57. A TV and a radio! So nice to have background noise when you're working. Who knows, sometimes there might even be something interesting on TV. Could happen.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Instead of a design wall - maybe a few design boards? Portable, light weight, and thin enough to file/shelve (I'm thinking like a foam board covered with a flannel or material of your choice, about 20x20 or so).

    ReplyDelete
  59. Tables! Ironing table, cutting table, sewing table... pinning table (we don't like the floor it is getting further away).

    ReplyDelete
  60. I was gonna suggest an inspiration board but looks like many readers have suggested that. May I suggest a GIANT UFO basket?

    ReplyDelete
  61. A comfy chair and some of favorite music. Sewing is heaven with both of those things!

    ReplyDelete
  62. A good iron and a big screen tv for watching old movies.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Basic to a sewing room is the sewing machine and something to put it on, so I will assume that you already have that. Besides your storage and lights, I would strongly recommend a design wall if you will be working with quilts larger than a table runner. Another thing would be unoccupied floor space. At the moment, I am tripping over something every time I turn around because my little space is so crammed with necessary stuff. Yes, floor space and a design wall. Those 2 would work well together.

    ReplyDelete
  64. For me it would be lots of hand ready storage units! Oh, and I love these scraps!!!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I agree with everyone who commented ahead of me. My one thing I couldn't live without (besides the sewing machine) is my cutting table!

    Maria

    ReplyDelete
  66. Design wall and something to listen to music on are my current must-haves! Thanks for the chance to win some pretty fabric!

  67. I know that when I am able to fix up a sewing space for me the main thing I want is a big ironing space. I have a regular ironing board set up now to use and that works okay but a bigger space would be so much better. I know you are excited about your new space. Congrats.

    ReplyDelete
  68. You need a big table! Mine is made from a hollow-core door from Home Depot, setting on top of bookcases. It's the perfect height for ironing, whether I'm using my small portable ironing board for piecing, or if I've spread a towel on it to iron big yardage. It's also the perfect height for cutting fabric without back strain. And with a bar stool and a foot rest, it's a great height for sewing, too. It sets in the center of my room, so I can get to both sides of it, which means my sewing machine can be set up on one side and my cutting board or my little ironing board can be set up on the other. (You can see pics on my blog from last week - I'm in the process of re-doing my sewing area, and love my new workspace!)

    ReplyDelete
  69. Love your blog and wish I had a sewing room to create!! All the prior suggestions are great. A table with a large self healing mat, a design wall, and great lighting would be in my top three. Also a TV wouldn't hurt in case I wanted to watch (listen) to a movie. Thanks for the give away!

    ReplyDelete
  70. A good table for your machine, with a recess so the machine can sit flat and lots of room at the back for quilts to fall off the edge when you're quilting.

    ReplyDelete
  71. An essential item in my sewing room is a small bulletin board. Mine is just 23 1/2 x 17 1/2. There I quickly pin notes to myself: a thread or tool I need to pick up next shopping trip, a blog I want to refer back to, a favorite designer or author to look into, measurements, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I would suggest a cutting table and pressing Table; one could Slide under the other so as to keep more space!
    Thanks for the giveaway.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Jane...I believe you NEED a design wall...I know that would be the one thing I would add if I could. Love your 30's fabric scraps!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hi. how wonderful to have a new sewing studio. I know you'll put all the "necessary" sewing items in your room, so I'd say you should include a great selection of different kinds of music and player (I love my IPOD dock station), plus a television/dvd player and a varied selection of movies that you've already seen and just want to "listen" to while piddling in your room. I hope you pick me, cuz a stash of 1930s prints would be great as an additional era in my fabric stash.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Love the 30s scraps. Would love to win them. I think you need a large cutting table at a proper height. Also, a comfy chair for hand sewing.

    ReplyDelete
  76. You need a radio, laptop, or i-pod to keep the tunes and audio books playing while you quilt! (At least that's one thing I would need if I came to your house. Oh, and I would need scraps, of course. I would love to wind your give away.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Definitely a designated spot for the computer. I hate having to run back and forth from the kitchen (where I sew at the table) to the living room to the comp to look at the next step of the instructions I'm following, LOL! If I was designing my own craft room, I'd have surfaces that I stand at (cutting, ironing, etc) at a custom height. I'm tall, and leaning over standard height counters hurts my back. Enjoy your new space!!

    ReplyDelete
  78. I'd say a sewing machine! JK. Actually I love the idea of having your computer in your sewing room. I have a lap top that I always take into my sewing room but it would be nice to have one in there. Thanks for the great giveaway.

  79. I love my design wall but you really need a spot for your coffee cup. I'm thinking right next to the stash of chocolate that someone else has suggested.

    ReplyDelete
  80. You need a big design wall. I do not have one and I am always looking at ideas for having one in my own quilt room. I love 1930's fabrics. I know most people either love the 30's or hate them...I love them!

    ReplyDelete
  81. something too play music on. like a cd player ore a radio.
i need it in my craftsroom.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Oh so many good suggestions...but I think you need space for a friend.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Portable design walls (more than one). I can not live without my design walls. I have three pieces of foam wall insulation that I covered with felt. They are light-weight and can be move around as needed. I can also work on more than one project at a time.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I say a big tack board - to keep WIP list on and notes and inspirational pictures etc. I love mine!
    Thanks for the lovely giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  85. somewhere to lay out ideas, table or bullentin boards. also, i think you need music (radio, ipod station). i love listening to my kind of music when creating...

    ReplyDelete
  86. I would say an oversized ironing board. I bought the biggest one I could find, but I think I'd like to build one so I can have a bit more room to iron those bigger pieces of fabric.

    ReplyDelete
  87. enough power points and a cutting table at the right hight

    cheers
    Christine

    ReplyDelete
  88. With your love of vintage fabrics it has to be a retro radio so that you can sing along while you sew. Janette

    ReplyDelete
  89. The perfect work triangle - sewing, pressing, and cutting. I like to have a pressing and cutting station (smaller versions) at my sewing table so I don't have to get up and down repeatedly.

    ReplyDelete
  90. You need a design wall! I love my big design wall and couldn't live without it! I wish it could be bigger so go as big as you can!

    ReplyDelete
  91. A design wall of some kind is a must - even if just a flannel backed tablecloth pinned to the wall in front of your sewing area.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I think everyone has already covered everything that you'll need...my thoughts are a big design wall, a big basteing table, and a small mini ironing board by you side so you don't have to get up and down to press those little tiny pieces like 1/2 sq tri's, and nine blocks..

    ReplyDelete
  93. Looks like everyone has already thought of everything... so I will be repeating what someone has already suggested: the perfect height table for cutting and basting so you don't get back strain. Thanks for the chance! Please show us photos!!

    ReplyDelete
  94. A nice big sewing table, comfy chair, ironing board and design wall, and a rubbish bin is always handy too. Would love your 1930's scraps to add to the ones I bought from you.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I would say a big table for cutting and ironing on. Tinkerfeet

    ReplyDelete
  96. A good table for cutting set up for your own height. A place where you are not bending over and hurting your back.
Please, can I enter your giveaway. I love those fabrics.

    ReplyDelete
  97. There are a number of items to add. A double sliding design wall large enough to accomodate 2 king size quilts. Two comfortable chairs so you can have 2 work stations without moving chairs. A huge cutting table on rolling/locking castors with room for two extra large mats and "project piles." A wall art thread holder (my late father made several and looks good/is very useful). The cutting table needs drawers around it, so you can stash rulers, rotary cutters, scissors, etc. Then, under the drawers, open storage area. One of those large, adjustable ironing boards that can be moved around. Lots and lots of electrical outlets along with laptop connections. A portable phone.
As you can tell, when you are buying my design ideas are unlimited. Please enter me into your drawing. Jane, I need the scraps so can join the sew scrap along. Thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  98. an inspiration board...a place to keep all those little things that inspire, like cards, magazine pictures, photos, snippets of fabric/ribbon...
and I would love to win 1930's as it is what is inspiring me at the moment!

    ReplyDelete
  99. music-almost as inspiring as blog hopping!!

    ReplyDelete
  100. Well, as I am sure you will figure out all the sewing essentials, I would say definitely don't forget to decorate your sewing room with inspirational stuff! Maybe curtains in a color you love, a small wall quilt, a painting that puts you in a good mood, and of course your design wall!

    ReplyDelete
  101. you CAN'T be w/out your sewing machine!! good back supportive rolling chair makes it easier on you too! great offer :) LoViNG the 30's vintage stash - woohoo :)

    ReplyDelete
  111. One thing I would say would be a cutting table/cabinet. Somwhere to be able to stand and cut your fabrics!!
    Thanks for the chance.

    ReplyDelete
  112. I pinned a big piece of white flannel to the wall, floor to ceiling, to lay out my quilts. It is perfect because I can take it down to wash and the nap holds really well. A nice comfy chair and light would be a great addition to sit and read quilt books. I enjoy having my computer in here and I listen to music on it as well.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I think an area for a cutting table would be nice. Also a design wall would most definitely be helpful. Great fabric - please enter me in your giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  120. An L shaped desk/crafting table! I don't know how I did it before my Husband got me one for my birthday a few years ago! I LOVE it! Sewing machine in one area and lots of room for making a mess in the other!!! lol

    ReplyDelete
  122. I adore 1930s prints! You need a place for a friend to sit when they visit with you, so you both can sew and chat. and a designated spot for your beverage of choice - I always end up spilling mine over whatever I'm working on. :)

    ReplyDelete
  123. a lot of things I would suggest have been mentioned allready. One thing I like is having small wicker baskets at the top of my cuttingmat. I put offcuts that are too small for scraps in one and use them as part filling for pincushions etc. The other one holds the scraps that are useable, to be transferred to the scrapbin later. A small tin is the temporary bin, but not much gets thrown away! This set up means I can keep my cutting table sorted, tidy and clear whilst cutting without having to run to the bin every minute (or the scrapbox). Hope that helps! I am making a 30's double weddingring at the moment so these fabrics in particular would come in very handy!

  126. Somewhere you can store all your threads so they are not jumbled up in a box hidden somewhere. They should be all aligned and visible and easily accessed. This is if you do have a lot of spools.

  127. The first thing that came to my mind is a comfy chair. You can't live without that! :)

  128. Since your sewing room is in your basement, I think you should have hardwood floors with heating cables underneath to keep your feet warm and toasty in the winter when you are having fun creating and sewing.

  130. I think a design wall is essential. And the biggest one you can fit on your wall. I had one for several years, but no room in the apt. I live in now. I sure miss it!

  134. Music you definately need music - music can soothe the soul, set the pace of sewing and slow and smooth or frantic...a source of enjoyment and entertainment. If you get an ipod and a docking station you can download all your favourites and listen for hours

  135. A big old desk that you can cut a hole in to recess your sewing machine - I absolutely adore mine!!

  136. Thanks for the giveaway, love 30's fabrics! I would have a laptop because you can run movies or music for background entertainment. Also a cutting table that is height specific just for you so no backaches when cutting, very important and nice to have.

  137. hiyall,
A design wall, yes. A comfy chair, oh hell yes! What I rely on in my own sewing room? A lazy susan with a multi cubby hole container that holds all of your essential tools. I have one set up and love it! (mauh) Liz

  138. Assuming you already have your secret stash of chocolate squared away, your chair is going to be important. An ergonomic chair will save a lot of pains in the neck!
