Advice Please.....

WARNING PHOTO HEAVY!!

When Little T was first born, I decided to make him a wall hanging using vehicles. I asked everyone who they would suggest to make these embroider pictures for me. The answer was unanimous, Michele form CalicoDaisy. We chatted on the phone (such a lovely lady) and came up with some designs. As you will see, she did an amazing job!! It has taking me a year to think about how I wanted to use the embroiders. I decided on a simple border for each as to not take away from the work. Here they are in all their glory;

Now I ran across a problem, one of the blocks was too big and part of the wings would be cut off, so I then had to eliminate another block.

These have been on my design wall for months as I have no idea how to proceed!!
Here is where I am asking for you advice…….

Should I put them together like this?

Should I put the plane in the middle? If so what color border should I use?

Should I make it 4 X 3 and just have part of the wings cut off? What color border should I use?

Should I keep the two out and eliminate one more for a 3 X 3 layout?

Sashing, border?? Holy Moly, I am so overwhelmed, I just have no idea how to proceed! Any advice would be appreciated!
Thank you for bearing with me on this long post!!

  1. I like having the plane in the middle. I would sash it in white and let the other blocks become its borders. I would incorporate the ship block into the back somehow, perhaps as the signature block. Whatever you decide it will look fabulous!

  2. If it were me, I would do the setting with the airplane in the middle and not cut off any of the wings. It looks great to highlight the plane and have the others surrounding it. For the saching around the plane, can you find another color to coordinate? How about a sky blue?
It's going to be a terrific quilt!

  3. Would the plane fit if you turned the fabric by 45 degrees or so, to put the wings in the corners of the block? It might look a little odd at that orientation, but it's worth a shot. If it fit, but looked odd, maybe you could randomize the orientation of the other blocks and it wouldn't stand out?

Anyway, best of luck with it, and I'm sure it will be cherished no matter what!

  4. Here's my 2 cents worth :) I would also keep the plane in the middle. For a sashing I would make it scrappy, using the fabrics that you used for the other blocks - maybe 2" long for each color. It really is adorable - definitely follow through with it and you will feel so good that you have another completed project! Good luck :)

  5. I like the plane in the middle - perhaps you could sash it with a multi-colored print - perhaps a polka dot with all those primary colors in it or something similar.
Then you could frame the ship on a pillow.

  6. What adorable blocks for a little guy!!!! I love the plane in the middle. I would use a colorful border with lots of black and white in it. I think the black and white gives a busy quilt a place to rest the eye. Then....I would add the second block to the back of the quilt for the signature block.

  7. I also think the plane should be in the middle. I like the idea of a checkered border for the plane made from the fabric surrounding the other blocks, I would then put the sashing between the plane border and the rest. A solid colored sashing would really help the different colors pop.

  8. I love them all and I do like having the plane in the middle.... You have such fun colors, why not use all of the colors to border the plane? May a ribbon effect, or ziz zag or just plain alternate blocks....it is going to look super!!

  9. I vote for plane in the middle as well. Then sash it, maybe with an as grey or even a natural. Or choose a color that is no predominant throughout like a lighter blue.

It's pretty hard to assume a color would look best. Maybe just lay the blocks on different colors to see what sashing color will look the best to you.
Great job, I just love these blocks!

  10. What a fun project! I love all the colors and the embroidery! Seems having the plane in the middle is the popular choice, and it's what I was going to suggest too! I like the idea of sashing it in white, but I also like the idea of making a scrappy sashing for it using the fabrics from the other borders.

It will be so cute and colorful when it's finished!

  11. My favorite way would be to feature the plane in the middle. It is too cute to eliminate. I know what ever you decide that it is going to be one of the cutest quilts alive!

  12. Wow, what a decision. It does seem puzzling. I would tend to put the 9 blocks together and leave the other 2 out. But that is just me. You could frame them or something. Anyway. You could also put the plane in the middle but don't leave as much white around it and double sash it or something. I'd try to keep as much white around the plane as are in the other blocks. I'd probably use white somewhere else in the quilt too. It is hard to know. This is a tough one! I had to enlarge the photos to see Michele's work. She's good. But so are you! Trust your instincts and what your gut tells you.

  13. I like your plane in the middle option. I think it's #2. Trim it out with a deep purple. That would really make that center block pop. Then you could trim out the last left over block in purple and make it into a little pillow or drawstring toy bag of some sort. So cute! Jenn

  14. I'm with Evelyn - would it work turned cattywhompus? If not, lots of great ideas here.

  15. add another color frame around all the blocks. and then cut the plane so that you only have to put one color frame around it. even if it is not a square. i don't think it matters how they are layed out. kids like things out of order. so they can tell you that they notice it. and if you have room for another block. and don't have another design. just do make a square within a square with all of your colors. it's really cute!

  17. Little boys love planes...it would be a shame to leave it out..I'm with the other girls..feature the plane in the middle. The sashing of the other blocks could be the sahing of the plane, or make it fit with multi coloured spot fabic sashing..and as Jenn said, make a pillow or book bag with the ship block..
just what I think...Little T is going to love it!

  18. Very Cute! I vote for the plane in the middle with multi-colored sashing and using the other block as a label on the back.

  19. Hmm..

If the plane is in the middle perhaps sash with a black and white stripe or polka dots. Then a black and white stripe outer border to tie it all together.

    OR

Take the plane out all together and put on back or make into a pillow or framed piece of art for the wall.

  20. I would keep the plane and place it in the middle. But I am partial to planes as my hubby has one and if I took it out he would be mad at me. But seriously, I like the look of the layout with it in the middle. Once they are together I would put a smaller inner border, but make it dark, even black. Then you can border it in anything you like, preferably a bright print. Okay, that is my two cents, I hope it helped.

  21. I like the plane in the middle. Don't cut the wings. Maybe sash in black and use the ship as part of the label.

  22. Wonderful blocks, Jane. All the ideas are so tempting. I'll eagerly wait and see what you do with them.

  23. I vote for the plane in the middle and bordered in black or dark blue, with the other blocks around the outside and maybe having black/blue sashing around all the blocks. Would that work?

  24. I love it with the plane in the middle. I think a black and white around the plane would look nice. I would probably use the same fabric to border the entire quilt or at least for the binding.

  25. Jane! I haven't blogged in a couple of days! The embroidery looks so beautiful surrounded by the great fabrics! I have no arrangement advice for you, but it looks like your blog friends have great ideas. I'm so glad to see the blocks all together! Hope you have a great weekend. It is GORGEOUS here. -- michele
