Do you make these?

Do you make cotton dish clothes?

For years my MIL every Christmas would give me dish towels and knitted dish cloths.
I love these so much.
She has sinced passed and I have tried other clothes but none seemed right. I still have one of hers and will never use it. I just keep it in a drawer.
I cannot just sit and watch a movie or TV, my hands must be doing something! At the moment I have no quilts to quilt so I pulled out my knitting needles and got busy.
I made eleven!

I use Sugar and Cream Yarn with size nine needles. I can get two dish clothes out of a skein with some left over. I will mix the left overs to get a few more.

There are many patterns on the web for the dish clothes but this is the one I use.

DIRECTIONS
Cast on 4 sts.
Row 1: Knit one row.
Row 2: K2, YO, knit to the end of the row.
Repeat row 2 until there are 40 sts.
Next row: K1, K2tog, YO, K2tog, knit to the end of the row.
Continue decreasing until 4 sts left.
Knit one row.
Cast off.

This should last a while and besides my hands are now very busy with Katie.

One last thing!
Look what starts tomorrow!

Oh I may find myself making some of these too! Click picture for more information.

Have a wonderful weekend!

  2. Jane,
They look wonderful. I love these they are my favorite wash cloths. I like to tie one to a dish towel when I give them as gifts. I love your colors.

  3. Great colors! We used to use these all the time but I switched to those blue handi-wipes. I still use the cotton ones for cleaning though. I usually use the same pattern that you posted. Nice and simple.

  4. I lOVE those kind of dish cloths. They wipe a counter so much better than a regular dish cloth. I crochet mine, but the knit ones are even better. Someday I will learn to knit, just so I can make one.

  5. Beautiful dishcloths! I make them too, only I crochet mine! I'm much too slow at knitting to be productive! They are wonderful to use!

  6. My mom used to make those, but knitting is just one more thing I don't do. They make great dish clothes, but I don't want to knit so I'll just look at your beautiful pieces. :O)

  7. My mother did the ones you could hang on the stove, she was into crochet. I haven't done it in years. I used the kona fabric, that I won from you in the charity quilt I made, made a nice contrast to the reds.

  8. Such a lovely blast from the past! I personally can only stick to one hobby at a time, thus the yarn has never had a place to accumulate.

    Thanks for the peek ~

  13. My MIL made those two! Sadly, she can't knit anymore but she is still kicking at 93. She will be moving in with us next month, should be interesting. She can't live alone anymore and we can't afford assisted living so that is our decision.

  14. I have a couple of those dish cloths but haven't used them. My dishes mostly go in the dishwasher and a sponge takes care of the rest. I thoroughly rinse and air dry my sponge each time and have never had a problem with it souring. Your cloths are beautiful - lovely colours.

  16. I make them with five knit and five purl across the cloth and then after ten I switch to five purl and five knit. It give the cloth some texture to help with scrubbing. I'm so much like you can't set still without something to do. My go to project is knitted socks.

  17. Jeepers!! This timing is amazing....I am a wannabe knitter. I have completed an icelandic wool sweater (it is warm but arms ???), and one felted purse (the store had an amazing sales person :-)! but have been trying to improve my skills practicing dishclothes with straight across rows. Just two days ago I saw one done with diagonal rows like yours and I was trying to figure out how to do it. Thanks for your directions and tips! They were selling your style for $10 each!
How nice of your MIL to make such an appreciated gift for you!!
