How do you sort scraps?

I have seen so many tips on saving and sorting scraps that I thought I would show you how I do mine.

Top left, I have a strip left over so, lower left, I place it on top of the corespondent fabric and then, right picture I fold and store them together. If I only have a smidge left I store them by color in shoe box size containers. I slip marked index cards in the storage box with the color written on them so if I need to change it, I just change the card.

I have always been afraid to cut the fabric into sizes as I know if i cut one inch I will need it two inches!!

I have six more but these tend to be the ones I use the most.

Happy Sewing!

  1. that's ALL your scraps?? nahhh can't be, show us more :) also where is it compared to your yardage?
You may have seen mine... I have yardage on one side of the room sorted by color, then anything less than a FQ is in red bins on the other side, each bin is subdivided, so with 6 bins I have 24 compartments- NOT that all my scraps actually GO in their designated spot, but that's another story :)

  2. I wish mine were in bins. I sort them by color also and they're in bags.

  3. I did that once, lol. Then I threw them all in a big box, I have a lot of scraps. I like saving them because when I need a small piece for appliqué, it is nice to dig through the box and not have to cut into new yardage.

  4. I sort exactly like you! But I don't put a color card in the box...I can see the color through the box. I don't know what to write. I'm still in shock that someone else works fabric exactly as I do! **eyes glazed over**. LoL

  5. I'm not one to cut my scraps neither. I have so many scraps that need to be sorted.
