Blog Hop July 14th

I have a guest today!
Please welcome
Diann!

Welcome to the Red, White, and Blue Blog Hop

My name is Diann and I'm from New Jersey. I've taken part in several blog hops as a hopper, but this is my first time as a presenter. Thanks to Jane for hosting me today. I have two blocks to show you today; one is traditional and the other is my own design.

When I decided to participate in this block hop, the first thing that came to mind was the Carrie Nation block. It's traditional, but not one I've seen a whole lot. I think it looks fabulous in red, white and blue.

Here's my block:

The background is Kona white and the other fabrics are scraps from my stash.

Next is a partial top from my pile of UFOs. It gives an idea of how these blocks looks when put together into a quilt. These blocks were from an exchange I did quite a few years ago. I love the diagonal effect of the red squares. What I don't love is the one block where the white is more of a cream. It just doesn't fit with the others. That's why these blocks ended up as a UFO. If anyone has a suggestion of how to salvage it, please let me know in the comments. I'd like to add more blocks and make a twin bed size quilt. No borders, just a red binding. Wouldn't it look fabulous? The white in these blocks were mostly white-on-white. If I were to start from scratch, I'd use the same solid white for all the blocks but still use a variety of reds and blues.

Next up is the block I designed myself. It's not terribly complex, but I really like it.

I call it Bubbles and it makes me think of a celebration. The background is Kona white and the rest is from my stash. I drew circles with a compass, and hand appliqued them. It was a lot of fun to make. I'm still trying to decide how I'm going to use the block. Let me know in the comments if you have any clever ideas.

Thanks to Jane and Madame Samm for putting together this blog hop. It has certainly generated a lot of interest. I've enjoyed seeing what everyone has made.

Don't forget to check out the other entries for today-and you can go back and check out any that you've missed by clicking the button on Jane's side-bar.

Yes, it is a scrappy quilt, so leave that block. Quilt it up and enjoy it. Thank you for sharing with us today.

Splash Stash is for your circle creation. Just love them. So I am going to make Splash too - stash s(c)ircles. Love Carrie Nation we have similar tastes as I like the diagonal effect - so good.
My brain can only come up with the careful bleaching of the cream squares with balls & tips. One at a time letting the part of the square dry out. But may make marble effect.
But if you have the months/years too do it ....what about others,
Thanks Diann for splash & to Jane.

I think you could leave the block as is in the quilt. It really looks fine and if you are going to add more blocks, make a few more that are off white and scatter them in the quilt. Love the bubbles block you designed. Could be a pillow cover or a table topper. Thanks for sharing!

Guess it is called "stepping out of your comfort zone" - kinda scary but the mixture of creams, whites and tans in a quilt I believe give depth to the quilt. It is beautiful and worthy of completing. Baubles is equally nice. Judy C

Love the blocks!

They are lovely but if it bothers you, "antique" it with some tea-dye and all the white will be cream. They won't all take the dye the same way and the red will be a little affected, the blue less so. Either that or rip it out and replace it. You know you want to...

Love your block : ) Now you inspired me! Thank you for sharing

As for the quilt - leave it alone! Quilt it with a color and you'll love it! How about a tote with your bubbles block or a purse? Thanks for sharing!

Love the bubbles! As for the cream color block, if it really bugs you try some of the suggestions above or applique something in that spot. It is a really nice quilt so it would be sad not to finish it.

I really to like your block and how it looks put together. I read the other gals suggestions. They all sound like great ideas. I know.. that unless I am comfortable with how something looks I am not satisfied. I like the idea of mixing other cream colored blocks around the outside. I think your idea of red binding with no border will be excellent. This was my first time participating as a hostess in a blog hop also...FUN!

Bubbles block very unique. I never see it before. Great job!

I think your blocks look great. I agree that you should just make more blocks with cream backgrounds and spread them out through out the quilt. It's a scrappy quilt, and I think it will look wonderful!!

Me personally, I would add more cream blocks but I understand that this doesn't work for everyone. maybe you could finish it as is and gift it or donate it.

Regarding your bubbles, they are wonderful. I think i would make 3 of them and hang them on a wall with either no frame at all or something very contemporary.

Thanks for playing with us.

I really love your circle block but I don't have any ideas at the moment about what you should do with it.

With the quilt however, I wasn't able to see what you were talking about with the cream vs. white comment until clicking on that to enlarge the picture. Then it was very noticable. I don't know how much work it would be to rip it apart to replace those cream squares since that would be the first option. Other ideas I had was that you could do either embroidery on those cream blocks so it looked like you did the cream on purpose to help your embroidery stand out more or possibly some applique there?

You said you didn't want to add a border or I was going to suggest using whatever color you wanted on that border and every so often drop in a cream colored area to make it look random just as the cream squares are in the quilt now.

Another thought is add some cream squares in the back of the quilt in the same configuration as those on the front are in to make it appear uniform.

Maybe some of those ideas gave you something to think about and you'll come up with something you like.
Good luck.

Great Blocks! I do like your quilt top with the cream since it is in the middle it does look like it was intended. If you are going to add more blocks I would get cream fabric and use it in some so they could be spaced to balance it out. Other than that my only solution would be to take it out but that is probably more work than you want.

The quilt looks fine as is - the different white is in the middle of the quilt and looks planned. Thanks for the nice post on your RWB day.

Diann,

I love the quilt and in your photo I don't notice any blocks that have an off white background. Great quilt and red binding would look nice. If it bothers you try add 2 more blocks with similar off white backgrounds.

your carrie nation block looks good done in rwb and looks great in your topper is great as it is. love the bubble block! a new fav among the blox of the hop!treat it like any other block ... it'll look good any way you work it up.

nice block Diann - love the bubbles - and in that photo you can't tell the off white so I'd just leave it in :)

SpartanBabe said...

If you have to change it, make a new one that matches better and put the cream one on the back. Either piece it into the back or use it as the label (or both!). I think it looks great, either way :o)

Great job Diann with your blocks and doing your first blog hop. My suggestion is the same as above, to make a new block and put the creme one on the back. It will be alittle work but if it bugs you now, it will always bug you. It's a beautiful quilt.

Glad you could hop along with us, Diann. Thanks, Jane, for sharing her blocks on your blog.

I agree... love the Carrie Nation block in RWB. And it makes a beautiful quilt. Sometimes that happens with a block swap, the color not being white-white. Finish the top and tea dye it. It would have an Americana look to it.

I love the circle block. I suggest making other circle or Bubble blocks each in a different color and then put them all together!! Would make a great child's quilt or even baby quilt!!!

I don't mind that there are variations in the color of your blocks but I would either rip out and change the cream ones or applique something over it. Tea dyeing might have an interesting effect on it.
I love your pretty four patch block
Thanks for participating in the blog hop.
Warmest regards,
Anna

Like your block, and also your quilt. It was obviously made during a time when you used more tone on tone fabrics, and I don't mind the cream in that one. Now that you've started using more solids it's not as crisp as you would like it to be, but I would suggest just finish it, and then maybe give it away, or donate it to someone who will use it, and wouldn't mind all the different colours! Love it!

What a lovely quilt top your block makes!

Just thinking that maybe you could replace the block with the cream in it,for a white one, then use it for the backing instead.

Love your circles block!

Thanks for sharing.
